The digital world that millennials and generation z are currently creating is completely different than the world that the boomers and beyond created. The largest argument is how the online world fits into our current world. There are huge advances in society thanks to the growth of the online world; worldwide communication, fast new feeds, open platforms, and so on. Websites such as Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, Steam, and Tiktok offer users access to everyone and everything happening in the world. Anyone can post something and anyone else can respond to it in whatever way they choose. A good example of this is President Trump’s usages of Twitter for various gains and purposes. This paper will cover how the people whom inhabit the online chatrooms, such as Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook, use the various portals to converse about the possibility of arming teachers in the classroom.
Regardless of how anyone may personally feel regarding President Trump on the political front, his usage of Twitter for political news and statement is a widely known characteristic trait of his. Often the nightly news producers can be heard talking about his tweets and to whom or for what purpose he was addressing. Months ago President Trump took to Twitter stating that teachers should begin to receive fire arms training in order to protect the students whom they love and teach. This controversial issue is never really talked about in length or depth because of the sad truth that people have to admit in order for it to be a problem. Twitter makes it so this conversation can be carried on worldwide and constantly. Someone on Twitter responded to President Trump’s tweet with this:
Since this was in response to a popular tweet, this response received a lot of spotlight in its own right. With this there response tweet that collected comments, separate from the comments on President Trump’s tweet, stemmed into a new conversation and collection of tweets. The beauty of Twitter is that one conversation leads to other conversations through the commenting and sharing of other people’s thoughts and ideas. Twitter allowing the commenting and linking of videos and images also adds to the conversation in a way that catches the person’s eye.
Branching off the idea of sharing images through Internet platforms, Reddit is widely known for spreading images and comments for all to see. One of Reddit’s greatest traits, and the reason many younger people embrace this platform is due to the humor they present. Humor is often used when it comes to topics of serious matters. Images such as the one below are posted to the platform and tagged into conversations, conversations such as the second image below.
